Asking an Italian public authority for documents

Different access procedures serve different needs. Choose the one that fits your request.

Access linked to your interests

Documentary access requires a direct, concrete and current interest connected with the document. Explain that connection. A general wish to inspect everything the authority does is not enough.

Missing required publication

Simple civic access concerns information, data or documents that should have been published but have not. The request asks the authority to meet that duty.

Broader civic access

Generalised civic access allows requests for further data and documents without proving a qualified interest. Exclusions, public interests and other people’s rights still limit access.

Make the request clear

Identify the document, office and period where possible. Imagined example: ‘The decision on my application, submitted on the date in my receipt’ is clearer than ‘Send everything’. Keep the request and submission receipt.

Check the response and deadlines

Refusal, partial access or silence must be assessed under the chosen procedure. Asking for documents does not automatically pause other legal deadlines. Flag any urgency at once.
