Before you sign a contract

A contract sets out what each person promises. Understanding it helps prevent disputes.

Make the promise clear

Check who the parties are, what is supplied, the price and other costs. Agree delivery dates and how completed work will be checked. Vague words can mean different things to each side.

Read every condition

Include attachments, renewals, payment and ways to end the agreement. A later spoken agreement may not replace the signed terms. Put agreed changes in writing.

An imagined example

You order a table. ‘A lovely table’ says nothing about size, material or delivery. Writing these down helps both sides understand the same promise.

Check which protections apply

EU consumer protections generally concern personal purchases from a trader. Business purchases do not automatically have the same protection. A right to change your mind depends on the purchase and its exceptions; it does not cover every contract.

Keep the records

Save the offer, full contract, terms, attachments and messages. Ask a professional about unclear clauses before making commitments or paying significant sums.
