Working remotely in Italy: checks before moving

A computer does not remove the rules of the place where you live and work.

Describe the actual work

Are you employed or self-employed? Where are the employer or clients, and where will you work? Calling yourself a digital nomad does not establish eligibility for a particular permission.

Separate the questions

Visa and residence, tax, social security and employment rules are connected but distinct. Entry permission does not settle tax duties. An overseas contract does not necessarily exclude Italian rules.

Prepare useful information

Gather the contract, duties, planned duration, financial records and housing details. Ask the relevant consular channels which route and documents fit the actual circumstances.

An imagined example

An employee remains employed abroad but works from Italy. An email agreement with a manager is not enough: effects on the employer and worker also need checking.

Plan beyond arrival

Check arrival formalities, renewals and changes of activity. A general guide does not determine visa eligibility. Coordinate immigration, tax and employment expertise in the countries concerned.
