Reporting a possible crime clearly

Describe events in order. Do not present suspicions as established facts.

Know the difference

In Italy, a denuncia informs an authority of a possible crime. A querela also expresses the wish for proceedings where the law requires it. The offence and circumstances determine the correct route and conditions.

Start with events

Give dates, places, people and observed actions. Separate what you saw from what others told you. Mark uncertain dates and do not fill gaps with guesses stated as facts.

Preserve the sources

Keep complete messages, documents, receipts and possible witnesses’ names. Retain originals without altering files. A professional checks relevance, lawful collection and how evidence can be submitted.

An imagined example

Someone promises delivery and disappears. Orders, payment and conversations help reconstruct events. Non-delivery alone does not always distinguish a contractual breach from fraud.

Seek help promptly

Some steps have specific deadlines. Do not wait for a perfect account before contacting an authority or lawyer. A general online report is not necessarily a valid denuncia or querela.
